We listen to feedback from our artists who are applying to calls on EntryThingy.
One question we often hear is, "how do I resize or reformat my image?" While galleries set the minimum and maximum size requirements (as well as any pixel requirements) per piece on EntryThingy, we want to make sure we are helping out our artists with the tools they need for success.
There are a number of issues artists can run into after finishing their work. Oftentimes, a scanned image may be too high quality and need to be compressed to apply to a call. Or perhaps they need to optimize their image for their email newsletter or for their own website outside of EntryThingy. Another one we hear often is, "how do I make it a perfect square to be on Instagram?" Well, we have an answer to that now. Introducing Pixel Prep from EntryThingy.
What Pixel Prep Does
Pixel Prep offers one-click presets for common use cases:
- Custom — Specify your own dimensions, max file size, and output format (JPEG, PNG, or WebP)
- Quick Compress — Reduce file size by ~70% while keeping dimensions
- Instagram Square — 1080×1080px square, JPEG under 4MB—ready for Instagram
- Jury Submission — 1920px longest side, 1–2MB JPEG (meets most call requirements)
- Web Display — 1920px wide, under 500KB WebP—fast web loading
- Email Newsletter — 600px wide, under 200KB for email clients
Upload images in JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, or GIF (up to 25MB), choose a preset, and download the optimized file. Pixel Prep converts any of these input formats to the output format and size specified by your chosen preset — for example, a HEIC from your phone or a high-res PNG scan can become a properly sized JPEG for a jury submission. For more on photographing and preparing images from the start, see our guide to photographing and resizing art for submissions.
How to Use It
Pixel Prep is live now—you can upload an image and have it automatically resized or reformatted. Then, feel free to upload that piece to your EntryThingy portfolio, or use it elsewhere. Simply log in to your artist account and go to https://app.entrythingy.com/artist/optimize. If you're already logged in, you can click on "Portfolio" and then "Pixel Prep" to find it.
Requirements
Pixel Prep is available to Artwork Management subscribers. Artwork Management is EntryThingy's artist subscription that lets you manage your portfolio, reuse images across submissions, and access tools like Pixel Prep.
What's Next
While we don't plan on getting into the business of image editing per se (we will leave that to Lightroom!), we can handle most resizing or file type changes. If there are any others you would like to see, please email us at hello@entrythingy.com with your suggestions. We hope this improves and simplifies the lives of our artist community!
